The Proverbial Fingerless Mitt

size: one size, final length 12 inches (30 cm)

yarn: I used Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino, 2 skeins

needles:  Set of 2.25 mm dpts (US size 1, UK size 13)

stitch guide:

rib pattern:  k2, p1 repeat

M1R - make 1 right by picking up the bar between stitches from back to front with the left hand needle and knitting into the front of the picked up stitch

M1L - make 1 left by picking up the bar between stitches from front to back with the left hand needle and knitting into the back of the picked up stitch.

let's knit.

cast on 48 stitches and divide evenly onto 3 dpts (16, 16, 16). place stitch marker and join in round being careful not to twist. work each round in k2, p1 rib pattern until piece measures 8 inches (20 cm).

Rnd 1: K2, M1R, p1, M1L, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 2: (K3, p1) twice, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 3: K2, M1R, k1, p1, k1, M1L, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 4: (K4, p1) twice, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 5: K2, M1R, k2, p1, k2, M1L, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 6: (K5, p1) twice, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 7: K2, M1R, k3, p1, k3, M1L, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 8: (K6, p1) twice, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 9: K2, M1R, k4, p1, k4, M1L, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 10: (K7, p1) twice, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 11: K2, M1R, k5, p1, k5, M1L, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 12: (K8, p1) twice, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 13: K2, M1R, k6, p1, k6, M1L, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 14: (K9, p1) twice, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 15: K2, place next 15 sts on holder for thumb. CO11 on right hand needle using backwards loop cast on, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 16: K7, p1, k7, p1, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 17: K2, (k2tog) twice, k1, p1, k1, (k2tog) twice, k2, p1, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 18: K1, (k2tog) twice, p1, (k2tog) twice, k1, p1, continue rib pattern to end

Rnd 19: K2tog, k1, p1, k1, k2tog, p1, continue rib pattern to end

continue working each round in rib pattern until piece measures 12 inches (30 cm). bind off pwise very loosely.

thumb

place 15 stitches from holder on 2 dpts. with third dpt, pick up and knit 8 sts across thumb opening. end of round.

begin next round K7, p1, knit to end of round. repeat for 10 rounds or until thumb is desired length. bind off pwise very loosely and sew in ends.

repeat instructions for mitt 2, slip them on and enjoy!
